The
house is from centuries on the hill of Pianogrillo,
stretched between cypresses and Saracen olive trees,
it overlooks the Acate flat, in the ancient county
of Modica and Chiaramonte. The central building was,
in the Middle Ages, a sighting tower, afterwards turned,
in the eighteenth century, in a master’s dwelling
in Ragusa style, with a noble chapel and underground
wine cellars with vaulted roofs. It rises in panoramic
position near the archaeological zone of Akrille,
ancient and mysterious Greek settlement, lost in time.
Still today in Pianogrillo there are some ancient
oil millstones made of lavic stone dated back to the
third century A.D. and ancient early Christian necropolis.
It was an ancient feud of the Pianogrillo barons,
nowadays transformed in a modern farm still managed
by their descendants. Here the origanum and the wild
asparagus grow between the olive trees. In the dry-stone
walls flourish the enormous plants of caper. Lemons,
oranges, almond trees and pricky pears complete the
landscape with a lot of cypresses and enormous carob
trees. A single fifty hectares field on the slopes
of the Ibleo upland, nine thousands olive trees in
the silent flow of the winds that go down to the blue
African sea near the Greek city of Kamarina.
